To Watch or to Smartwatch?

Remember when your watch could only tell the time? Now it’s more like a digital assistant permanently strapped to your wrist. Being able to receive calls, texts and make contactless payments, we all know they’ll be the next generation of luxury watches, but also the future of mobile. From the development of modern technology, smartwatches are predicted to replace traditional watches in the future and could eventually lower the market value of the high-end accessories. With smartwatches readily available, why would anyone want a watch that only has one purpose?

Traditional vs Smart

Traditional watch wearers rarely buy, in particular, luxury watches with the functional use in mind. People buy a Rolex for the brand and design values, as a fashion statement and to communicate their luxury lifestyle ideals. Smartwatches are aimed at a completely different market. They are equipped with so many different functionalities and features. Although still a luxury product, people buy smartwatches with their full intention of using it as more than just another accessory.

New versions of smartwatches are constantly being released with new and advanced features every time. Just like smartphones and most other types of modern technology, they decrease in value as new and improved updates and versions are released onto the market. Traditional watches, on the other hand, hold much greater value. They are an art form that are made to last and retain value for much longer than modern technology ever will. Luxury watches are made to grow value, even sentimental value over time, whereas developers of smartwatches are always working on new and improved models to put out onto the market.

Smartwatch UX + UI

Smartwatches should be both aesthetically pleasing and functional. Clock faces are for watches of the past. Smartwatches have a touchscreen interface where you can interact with apps that you also have on your smartphone, displaying your messages and notifications without even having to look at your mobile. What would be the point of using a smartwatch if it keeps running out of charge? Smartwatches are designed to make your life easier and have a long battery life to get you through your day and leaving you stress-free. Some even have a feature to answer your messages and texts by voice cutting out using your smartphone completely. Smartwatches can also be used for contactless payments instead of using your contactless card or mobile app, making life a lot easier. Are you sure your Rolex is still better than a smartwatch?

The user experience of a smartwatch is something that a traditional watch will never be able to live up to. A digital interface strapped to your wrist is more useful in our modern day technical world than a traditional watch face will ever be. Let’s be honest, all a Rolex has to offer is the time and a fancy strap, a smartwatch is worlds ahead of that. Traditional watches offer a traditional user interface element when it comes to fashion, whereas smartwatches are heavily user-focused and are designed with the user’s digital experience as a priority.

It’s safe to say that smartwatches are the future of modern technology and will only continue to become more and more advanced over time. Although simple, traditional watches quite literally run like clockwork and there is no doubt that they will always have their place in the high-end market.

So to watch or to smartwatch?
